Given the level of the agency's failure and the level of criticism the agency has received, it is nothing short of astonishing to learn that FEMA has sent a planeload of people evacuated from New Orleans to the wrong city. Approximately 180 people were sent not to Charleston, South Carolina, where medical staff and authorities stood by at the airport, awaiting their arrival, but to Charleston, West Virginia -- 400 miles away.
To make matters worse, when the mistake was discovered, the plane was not immediately rerouted to the correct destination. As of 11:30 Tuesday night, it was not clear that FEMA had made any plans at all to transport the mis-delivered evacuees to their actual destination.
Need it be said again -- Mr. President, please fire Michael Brown immediately.
