In an interview with Larry King, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld states that, during the height of the scandal that followed revelations of the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, he twice offered his resignation to President Bush.
"Rumsfeld says: 'I submitted my resignation to President Bush twice during that period and told him that ... I felt that he ought to make the decision as to whether or not I stayed on. And he made that decision and said he did want me to stay on.'"
In the context of increasing volatility in Iraq in the months leading up to this week's elections, there was a tenable argument that Sec. Rumsfeld should be maintained in place for the sake of stability and to avoid inviting further chaos. Now, with successful elections having taken place, marking at the very least a symbolic setback to the insurgents, does this argument still hold?
